Numi's Battle

September 30, 2010

I've accepted that I will always be second on his dance card. And Numi loves to dance.

Another Fun Place to Visit!

September 29, 2010

Hello dear friends - I wanted to draw your attention to a new blog we've just launched for La Lune Events. Over there you can find event-related inspiration, real weddings, and other fun and beautiful tidbits for the everyday. We're trying to grow our audience, so spread the word! Tell your friends! You'll love it, I promise! :)

In other news, I am getting more used to the flow of working for myself. I've developed a routine, but still relish those moments when I can set down my work, and go for a run/bake banana bread/try out a new recipe/read a magazine - and then get right back to work. I've also enjoyed the networking process - meeting with other event professionals, collaborating on projects - and for the most part everyone has been so welcoming of our new venture.

Let me break it down with a musical metaphor: La Lune Events has grown from a little voice, excited and eager, like a child singing Itsy Bitsy Spider, to a small indie band with a decent following. We're not any big player up here in Spokane (yet!) but we've got clients, and friends, and we're moving further up and further in. I just about had a heart attack when a big bridal blog contacted us to ask if they could feature out business - I mean, come on!?

I'm so thankful for this time of my life to risk and adventure; to not know all the answers and to be okay with it. I never expected to be right here, in this place, but I'm so glad that I am.

The Adventure continues!

September 27, 2010
Today I actually did my hair, even though I was working from home all day, and as sad as this sounds - it made me feel glamorous. And that got me thinking...yikes, this is really sad - I should make an effort more often...

And that got me thinking about my favorite glamour icons from the 1930's - in particular Myrna Loy, who always did her hair and looked fabulous.

Clever, sassy, sexy, smart, opinionated - oh Myrna, you're my heroine. And I mean you're like a hero...not like the drug. Though I am pretty addicted to the Thin Man movies.

La Lune Events at Bridal Fest

September 26, 2010
Alisa and I have been prepping for weeks, and had a successful and enjoyable time at Bridal Fest yesterday. We made some amazing new friends - from other vendors and folks in the biz to new brides - it was a great day filled with many wonderful things. Here are a few photos of our booth and friends:

Autumnal Greetings!

September 23, 2010

To celebrate the start of my favorite time of year, (and the first official day of fall!) I wanted to share a freebie with everyone - a festive October desktop calendar. I've starting doing more graphic design on a regular basis - a few logos for local businesses, some blog buttons and headers, and of lots of goodies for the business. I have a growing file of things like this calendar, so I figured I'd start posting them so that others can share in the fun. Okay, maybe the fun is only had by me, but everyone needs a calendar, right?!

just right click, save image, and apply as desktop.

Ready, Set, GO!

Yesterday was Matthew's first day of Graduate School.
The night before was spent finalizing the syllabus for the course he'll be teaching - as well as collecting books, recorder playing. and zucchini-bread-making.
As I ushered him off, I was hit with how far we've come since the last time we were in school- we've been college graduates for over three years now, moved twice, lost family members, met new friends, had many adventures, and prayed over and over for Grad school - and now here we are.
When Matthew returned home last night after a full day, he said breathlessly:
"I can't believe I get to have this much fun everyday!"
When asked, "what would you like to do to CELEBRATE!?"
This is what my dear husband chose:

oreo/chocolate pudding pie with cinnamon vanilla whipped cream
Really, is there a better way to celebrate? :)

Here's to my brilliant husband -CONGRATS!

Morning Walk / Neighborhood Tour

September 21, 2010
This morning I woke up feeling...cranky. After a night of tossing and turning, with only a few hours of solid sleep, and the still devastating  lack of coffee in the kitchen, I knew that I needed an attitude adjustment or else it was going to get ugly. Thankfully I'm married to a wonderful man and live with a rambunctious black lab - who both have amazing attitude-adjusting-powers. We decided on a morning walk around our beautiful neighborhood.
someone's raring to go...

this house may look harmless...but a freakish shaved cat resides here, and likes to chase's truly frightening. thankfully, no sighting today.

monster dahlias!

love that yellow.

touches of fall.

blue sky.

cute little ones off to school.

happy girl.

Beef Stroganoff / How to Beat a Gray Day

September 19, 2010
Certain days call for certain things - a summer day calls for a glass of lemonade, a winter day calls for a roaring fire and a steaming mug of cocoa, and yesterday, a drizzly fall day, calls for Beef Stroganoff.
It's easy, relatively quick, and deliciously good.

adapted from Simply Recipes
  • 4-6 Tbsp butter
  • 1 pound of top sirloin or tenderloin, cut thin into 1-inch wide by 2 1/2-inch long strips
  • 1/2 cup sliced onions (slice from pole to pole)
  • 1/2 pound cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste
  • 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, to taste
  • Splash of Sherry
  • 1 cup of sour cream at room temperature
  • Whole wheat egg noodles

The key to a great developed flavor is cooking the first three ingredients separately.

1. Melt a bit of the butter in a large pan set to medium heat. Increase heat to medium-high and brown strips of beef on both sides; work in batches to ensure even browning. Remove beef, set aside.
2. Reduce heat to medium and add onions. Saute until soft and lightly browned. Remove onions, set aside.
3. Increase heat to high, and add another couple tablespoons of butter. Add sliced mushrooms  and a splash of sherry and cook for 5 minutes. Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg to taste.
4. Reduce heat to low, and add sour cream. Stir to combine. Be careful not to boil the mixture as the sour cream will curdle. Add meat and onions, adjust salt and pepper as needed.
5. Serve over egg noodles (we use whole wheat) or another pasta of your choice.

Pure Deliciousness:

Let the sun shine in

September 18, 2010
Stormy days are actually some of my most productive: cleaning, cooking, organizing, and most importantly - pining away after sale items from J Crew. I am seriously considering the red trench...

And I'm in love with the Anthro dress...

and this cardigan from Gap looks pretty snuggly...

Ah, the joys of online window shopping.

Looking Ahead

September 17, 2010
Today marks the end of the last full week of Summer for the Roys - yes, it appears we've already progressed into the rainy season up here, but next week Matthew officially starts his Master's program at Eastern Washington University. To be back in school again is a dream come true for Matthew - we've spent the last three years trying to find the right program...and after many closed doors, here we are, perched on the edge of a whole new season of life.
For Matthew this means papers, (more) books, teaching Music for Humanities, grading papers - in other words, academic heaven. He has already met scores of folks who have been encouraging, welcoming, and just downright fun.
He's thrilled.
As for me - I will continue on my small business venture with Alisa.
I feel so blessed to spend my days working on projects and events where I am able to tap into my creative brain and thrive.
As the events roll in, I am thankful that this sort of busy leaves me feeling recharged and excited for the next event.
Alisa has been an amazing addition, and the more we work together, I am evermore convinced of our dynamic-duo-powers.
So this next season is a brand new one for both of us...starting new things that we've dreamed about, working hard, and (hopefully!) reaping the benefits.

Event Day

September 14, 2010
Typical event day for Jessica and Alisa.
Got the coffee, car load of supplies, and a very drooly Bull Mastiff.
Ready. To. Go.

By the looks of Diesel's drool, you'd think I was holding a huge steak. Reality: a lemon Luna bar.

Radio Silence & Recent Happenings

September 10, 2010
Sorry about the radio silence this past week. Our business has leaped into the realm if mega-busy, and there's a ton to do. And then there's the flurry of etsy orders too (wahoo!). Amidst all the craziness, some really wonderful things have occurred.
Reconnecting with my best friend Katie.
Patting myself on the back for (almost!) creating a whole new
flash site for La Lune.
Welcoming Erik back from his travels in Alaska.
Having a brief chat with my brother, who lived in Ventura- these little beauties just make my day.

Crazy times or not - Summer has just flown by, and I'm really starting to feel the changing of the seasons. Cloudy days, leaves already starting to change, and it's still freaking me out to see Halloween costumes and decorations everywhere. And Christmas is right around the corner!

We've been enjoying the end of Summer...being outdoors, antique faires, enjoying visits from parents, and taking full advantage of the loveliness from Alisa's garden.
Here's Kath and I at the Funky Junk show.

Have a fabulous weekend!

Downtown CDA Farmer's Market

September 2, 2010
The clouds have been gorgeous lately, and the rain even better! Alisa and I braved the weather to check out the last CDA Farmer's market of the season - and we were not disappointed. Umbrella in hand, we perused the beautiful displays of veggies, fruit, flowers, and stone baked pizza (the spinach-goat cheese-spicy-one was amazing...), and then enjoyed some warm drinks and antiques. A lovely afternoon - we even scheduled a la lune hosted event at the Hippie Kat Vintage shop...more to come soon!

A little drop of rain

spreading the word

This store had some of the most beautiful vintage clothes I've ever seen...can't wait for our event!
